Kinston Indians History

Kinston Baseball 1920-1989
Professional baseball came to Kinston in 1908, but the city's love of the game goes back much further. There are nineteenth century accounts of local "Base Ball matches" between the "Fleet Foot Club" of Kinston and nines from surrounding communities. Kinston Baseball 1989-2004
With no playoff appearance in 1989, the Kinston Indians got back on track in 1990 by capturing the first and second half Carolina League Southern Division Titles before falling to Frederick 3-2 in the League Championship Series. In 1991, a K-Tribe team led by future major leaguer Brian Giles, swept the first and second half division titles again, but finished the job with a 3-0 sweep of Lynchburg to take their second Carolina League Title. Manager Brian Graham added to the trophy case, by taking home the Carolina League Manager of the Year award. In 1993 Pete Rose Jr. hustled the K-Tribe back into the playoffs after capturing a 1st half title, but the Warthogs of Winston-Salem banned the Indians from going any deeper with a 2-1 win in the Division Series. Kinston Baseball 2005
Kinston started off their Carolina League Title defense in style in 2005, winning 41 games on way to a Southern Division First Half Championship. Kinston Baseball 2007
Behind Carolina League Manager of the Year Mike Sarbaugh, the 2007 Kinston Indians slugged their way to an 87-52 record and a sweep of the first and second half titles in the Carolina League Southern Division.  The sweep was the first for Kinston since 2001 and the seventh in franchise history.  Kinston advanced to the Carolina League Playoffs for a record seventh straight year.  The 87-52 record was the best in the Carolina League and the third most wins of any team in Minor League Baseball for the 2007 season… read the whole story»
