Kinston Indians 1989 - 2004

With no playoff appearance in 1989, the Kinston Indians got back on track in 1990 by capturing the first and second half Carolina League Southern Division Titles before falling to Frederick 3-2 in the League Championship Series. In 1991, a K-Tribe team led by future major leaguer Brian Giles, swept the first and second half division titles again, but finished the job with a 3-0 sweep of Lynchburg to take their second Carolina League Title. Manager Brian Graham added to the trophy case, by taking home the Carolina League Manager of the Year award. In 1993 Pete Rose Jr. hustled the K-Tribe back into the playoffs after capturing a 1st half title, but the Warthogs of Winston-Salem banned the Indians from going any deeper with a 2-1 win in the Division Series. K-Triber Julian Tavarez captured Carolina League Pitcher of the Year honors as his skipper Dave Keller brought home the Manager of the Year crown.

In 1994 Grainger Stadium got a face lift by building new offices, an expanded clubhouse, souvenir stand, bathroom facilities, entrance way, and even an upgraded parking lot. The team might have relaxed a little too much in the new, comfortable surroundings; they failed to make the playoffs.

The team made up for it in 1995 as the team captured another Carolina League Crown. Richie Sexson, Ricky Gutierrez and Enrique Wilson led a high powered offense to win the first half division crown by 10 games. An equally impressive pitching staff lead by future big leaguers Bartolo Colon and Danny Graves helped the Indians capture a second half crown on way to a 3-0 sweep of Wilmington and a third Carolina League Title in the teams last eight seasons. Richie Sexson was named League MVP, Bartolo Colon took home Pitcher of the Year honors, but Kinston Manager Gordy MacKenzie came up second in the voting for Manager of the Year to Wilmington's John Mizerock. Wilmington wouldn't let Kinston do it again, beating the K-Tribe 3-1 for the Carolina League Championship in 1996. Sean Casey showed what he was made of as the K-Tribe captured a second half crown, but it was Pitcher of the Year Noe Najera and Manager of the Year Jack Mull who took home the hardware. Russ Branyan led the K-Tribe back into the playoffs in 1997 with a first and second half sweep, before falling in the League Championship Series 3-1 to Lynchburg. Kinston manager Joel Skinner kept the Manager of the Year title with the K-Tribe for another year.

The K-Tribe rebounded from being left out of the playoffs in 1998, with a first half crown in 1999. Carolina League newcomer Myrtle Beach disrespected their elders by disposing of the Indians 2-1 in the Division Championship Series, but Carolina League Manager of the Year Eric Wedge continued to make a name for himself, becoming the Cleveland Indians head man just a few years later.

Y2K meant trouble for the K-Tribe as the Indians experienced their worst Carolina League finish since the team became a Cleveland affiliate in 1987.

2001 looked a lot better as the Tribe swept both the first and second half titles, behind Carolina League MVP Victor Martinez. The Tribe fell 2-1 to Salem in the Division Championship Series, but Tribe skipper Brad Komminsk brought home another Manager of the Year award, the fourth K-Tribe manager to win the award in the past six seasons.

Kinston made another run at the Mills Cup in 2002, taking a second half title all the way to the League Championship Series, until Lynchburg licked the Tribe 3-1.

In 2003 first year K-Tribe Manager Torey Lovullo led his troops to a second half title. The Tribe would get swept 2-0 in the Division Championship Series by Winston Salem, but it would lay the foundations for a magical season in 2004.
