The K-Tribe Sweeps Carolina League Weekly Awards
Kinston’s Josh Tomlin and Jason Denham are the CL Pitcher and Player of the Week
KINSTON – The Kinston Indians sweep the Carolina League Weekly Awards, punctuation a fantastic start to the second half of the season. Kinston starting pitcher Josh Tomlin is the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week and K-Tribe outfielder Jason Denham is the CL Player of the Week. As a team, the K-Tribe owns an 8-2 second half record, the best in the Carolina League.
Carolina League All-Star Josh Tomlin earns Pitcher of the Week honors after giving up just one hit in six innings in a rain shortened K-Tribe shutout victory over Frederick on Saturday. Tomlin struck out five and faced the minimum for the win. Earlier in the week, Tomlin pitched a perfect second inning helping the Carolina League beat the California League in the annual All-Star Game. The Texas native is 6-3 with a 3.47 ERA in seven starts and 14 relief appearance this season. Tomlin has struck out 59 and walked only eight in 62 plus innings this season.
Kinston outfielder Jason Denham is the Carolina League Player of the Week after hitting .500 in an All-Star Break shortened four games. Denham was 7-for-14 with three doubles and six RBIs in the four contests. Denham’s week highlights a fantastic June, as the outfielder is hitting .329 in the month. Denham is hitting .378 (14-for-37) in his last ten games, vaulting his average from .227 to .261 for the season.
Denham and Tomlin, join pitcher Jim Deters and outfielder Cirilo Cumberbatch as the other K-Tribers to grab Carolina League Weekly awards this season. It is the first time a pair of Kinston Indians has swept the weekly awards since pitcher Frank Herrmann and infielder Matt Whitney took the honors in August of 2007.
Kinston owns the Carolina League’s best record in the second half at 8-2. The K-Tribe is leading the CL Southern Division by two games. Since April, Kinston owns the second best record in the Carolina League at 34-21. Kinston is tied for the most wins in the CL in June with 17.
